8 Tips for Choosing a Wedding Photographer

I want to start with one of the most common questions couples have when they come to me. How do we choose the right photographer for our wedding? There are so many wedding photographers to choose from and the decision can be overwhelming. In this article, I’m going to share some tips for choosing the right wedding photographer.

1. Know Your Style

Decide on the photography style you love—light and airy, dark and moody, candid/documentary, or classic/traditional. This helps narrow down photographers who specialize in that vibe.

2. Review Full Galleries

Don’t just rely on Instagram highlights. Ask to see full wedding galleries to get a sense of how they shoot the entire day, not just the best five photos.

3. Check Experience with Weddings

Wedding photography is fast-paced. Look for someone who’s experienced with real wedding days—not just styled shoots.

4. Read Reviews & Testimonials

Past clients can tell you a lot about a photographer’s personality, professionalism, and how they handle pressure.

5. Meet in Person or Virtually

Chemistry matters. You’ll spend a lot of time with your photographer on your wedding day, so make sure you feel comfortable around them.

6. Discuss Packages Clearly

Make sure you understand what’s included—hours of coverage, number of photographers, delivery timelines, albums, etc.

7. Ask About Backup Plans

What’s their backup plan if they’re sick? Do they have backup equipment? A professional will have contingency plans in place.

8. Match Your Budget

Photography is an investment. Set a realistic budget, but know that good photography often reflects the price. Sometimes, it’s worth spending a bit more for peace of mind and quality.

9. Check Their Editing Style

Make sure their editing style is consistent and matches what you’re drawn to. You don’t want any surprises when you get your photos.

10. Get Everything in Writing

A solid contract protects both sides. Make sure all details—deliverables, timelines, payment plans, cancellation policy—are clearly stated.
