Newborn Session - Baby Freyja

Precious Freyja Mae (pronounced Frey-a) was born on February 25, 2021 at 3:45pm to Jessica and Patrick. The name Freyja stems from Norse mythology. Freyja is highly celebrated as the goddess of love, beauty, fertility, and war. Other meanings of her name include “lady" and "noble woman.” 

While I am not well versed as a newborn photographer, I was unable to let the opportunity to photograph my new niece pass me by. I began to study to catch up to speed on such a delicate subject matter. I studied up on safe positioning of a newborn baby, purchased some props, and played with the theme while learning the best techniques for working with newborns and infants. While I certainly had my work cut out for me, it was all worth it once the end result was achieved. 

We very nearly missed the chance to do Freyja's newborn shoot as her Mother had complications that kept her in the hospital on and off in those first two weeks.  In addition to the repeat hospital admissions, my home studio is currently undergoing renovations.  Luckily Mom was able to come home and we managed around the construction so that it all worked out.

Freyja, the tiny beauty, has a full head of thick dark brown hair and a smile that would leave anyone gushing over her. Don't even get me started on those cheeks! Freyja was wide eyed and needed a bit of coaxing and a full tummy before she eventually began nodding off. She drifted in and out of sleep throughout the session but was easily consoled and quickly settled in once in position for the photo. 

The difficulty I found while working with Freyja is adjusting to the delicate work that is photographing newborns. While posing an infant you have to ensure that they are stable, comfortable and have proper circulation. Newborns babies are known to photograph well while swaddled tightly which can take a whole set of tricks in itself to accomplish. The differences with exploring different aspects of photography are also what makes it so rewarding and enjoyable.  

Photographing newborns feels like it couldn’t be further from the fast pace that many photographers, including myself, are familiar with when photographing weddings or similar functions.  However, there actually are a few similarities between the two, such as being detail oriented and slowing down to ensure that everything is just right.  

Overall, I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to photograph little Freyja.
